I can never tell if turians are supposed to be plantigrade or digitigrade.

I've always wondered why there are two spikes sticking out of the calves. Do they serve any purpose or is it remainings from past evolution?

I'm guessing they're analogous to spurs on roosters and other birds, since the design team's stated the final turian design is avian-influenced.
